Earliest Boxing Memory:  Watching Marvin Hagler destroy Alan Minter on telly, and wondering why they were throwing beer cans in the ring. Fondest Boxing Memory: Getting far too excited by the over-enthusiastic radio commentary when Bruno 'hurt' Tyson in 89. Worst Decision: Tyson Fury v John McDermott. Fantasy Fight: Hong Kong Phooey v Captain Caveman. Not-so Fantasy Fights: Darren Barker v Matthew Macklin, John Murray v Gavin Rees, Herbie Hide v Danny Green (please).

Eric Armit

Eric Armit's picture
I am not saying how old I am but I have long since outgrown my hair and the HSE will not allow me a birthday party cake due to the fire hazard from the numerous candles. Boxing wise, I began collecting records in 1956 and despite the excellence of BoxRec I still do so. I started doing the records for the Boxing News Annual in the late 1960’s and also started doing the World, European and Commonwealth ratings for them around the same time. I wrote my first feature for Boxing News in 1972 (Clemente Sanchez). I did my first column for Boxing World (an unsuccessful break away from Boxing News) in the same year. After Boxing World collapsed, I did bits and pieces for Boxing News until Harry Mullan asked me to do a weekly column, which I did for more than 30 years. I was a member of the first ever WBC Ratings Committee in the mid 1970’s and worked with them on and off for almost 30 years. I was also a Technical Advisor to the EBU Ratings Committee until this year, and an advisor, and later Chairman, of the Commonwealth Boxing Council - A post I stepped down from in April 2010, although I continue as a Director and advisor.
After Boxing News dispensed with my services I was lucky enough to have Tom Walker and Ian McNeilly encourage me to continue to write which is how I ended up with BoxRec News.
Outside of boxing, as boxing has never been anything but as obsessive hobby to me, my career was spent in the Oil and Gas industry, which is how I ended up in Aberdeen. I was a Purchasing and Materials Manager and had two terms as Chairman of the industry’s Procurement Committee and worked with the CBI Committee on European Procurement. Directives. I retired in 2007 (I realised I had retired when my Agent did not invite me to his Christmas party at the end of 2006)
I am also Chairman of the local branch of a charity which provides free bereavement counseling.
My real love is football and for my sins, through an accident of birth, I have been a life long supporter of East Fife (something which provides Mr. McNeilly with endless amusement).
On the family side I have a daughter who lives with her husband down in Carnoustie and I am currently battling with my son-in-law who wants my grandson to grow up loving rugby and supporting Aberdeen. Life can be so cruel.

Tom Walker

Tom Walker's picture

Tom's boxing career was a damp squib, it certainly didn't go with a bang, losing more than he won. He made a far better referee, covering the action in over 600 bouts in the amateur code! He's been writing about boxing for various media outlets for years whilst working in the Oil Industry in Aberdeen. He also had the honour of representing Scotland as team manager, delegate to the World and European Congresses and on Team GB. He's since left the amateur code to become an Inspector with the BBBoC in the North of Scotland. His heroes in the noble art are of a bygone age, Freddy Mills & Sonny Liston. His distaste for multiple world championships (?) stems from the fact that there were only eight when he boxed and you knew who they were!

Jon Briggs

Jon Briggs's picture

Boxrec news is Jon's first taste of boxing writing. Having been a fan of the sport for years he was looking for a way of getting more involved in boxing without lacing up the gloves! Being part of the Boxrec team has opened up so many doors for Jon. Covering fights from ringside and meeting boxers are just some of the opportunities that have arisen.

Jon is 34 years old and lives in Newport Pagnell, Buckinghamshire where he juggles working in IT with spending time with his wife and five children.

Jon can be contacted via Northender7@yahoo.com - Yes he is a Preston North End fan!

Martin Dobbing

Martin Dobbing has worked with BoxRec News since the beginning after a lengthy spell at britishboxing.net. Though he deals with fighters from all around Britain, his main area of expertise is the emerging Chester boxing scene.

When he is not writing, Martin will either be found working in the Bingo industry, or spending time with his girlfriend Caroline and his 8-year-old daughter Hannah. Either that or in the pub, take your pick!

Feel free to contact me at martin_dobbing@hotmail.com

Brendan Galbraith

Brendan Galbraith's picture

Brendan has been writing for BoxRec News since its formation. His first taste of the sweet science was going to watch Barry McGuigan and Hugh Russell in the Kings Hall in Belfast in the 1980s. Brendan covers Irish and UK boxing and writes for other online boxing sites. Brendan's favourite boxing writer was the great Budd Schulberg, who was a brilliant, entertaining writer and never shied away from writing about both sides of the boxing business. Martin Williams is a news and sports journalist with the Daily Post in North Wales.

A former chief reporter and news editor of several titles in the region, he has written for britishboxing.net and numerous other boxing websites over the last decade.

Martin's biggest interview came recently when he found himself sat on a couch with an unpredictable and tired Mike Tyson in Llandudno! Other names on his CV include Carl Froch, Glen Johnson, Joe Calzaghe and Ricky Hatton, though he's also gone toe-to-toe with political heavyweight John Prescott.

He has been asked to give his opinions on the sport by several radio and TV stations, notably Setanta and Talksport ahead of the Floyd Mayweather v Ricky Hatton fight.

The 32-year-old lives in Abergele with fiancee Kelly and has an eight-year-old daughter, Mollie. He is set to become a dad again this summer.

As a former writer for BBN, Craig has written for Boxrec News since its inception. Craig mainly writes about Scottish boxing and was transformed into a passionate fan of the sport ever since the first time he watched Prince Naseem in the ring. Marc Stockings

Marc Stockings's picture

Marc is originally from Bethnal Green and now lives in East Anglia. His interest in boxing stems from a family history in the sport, which includes George Kid Socks, the Commonwealth title challenger whose career spanned from 1922 until 1934. Marc’s own boxing career wasn’t nearly as lengthy or illustrious, but he maintains a close interest in the boxing scene.

The first fights he remembers watching are those between Chris Eubank and Nigel Benn in the early 1990s. Marc’s top five boxers, in no particular order, are Lennox Lewis, Larry Holmes, Marvin Hagler, Joe Calzaghe and Roberto Duran.

He was awarded an MA from King’s College London in 2010. Outside of boxing, you might find him on the terraces of White Hart Lane.

Marc can be contacted at: ms1880@hotmail.com

Martin Supple

Martin Supple's picture

Martin joins BoxRec News after previously writing for britishboxing.net. He continues a 25-year (his wife would say unhealthy) obsession with boxing despite his equally enthusiastic uncle taking him to see his boyhood hero Lloyd Honeyghan hammered in 3 rounds by Mark Breland back in 1990.

Although he's been lucky to see some of British boxing's best fight live over the years, he lists his favourite moment as being ringside for the double-knockdown during Paul Samuels v Cello Renda I in 2009.

A keen collector of fight videos, Martin still holds out hope someone will one day discover a film of the 1st Zale-Graziano fight!

Paul Foley

Paul's interest for the noble art began in the mid eighties when Sportsnight displayed the likes of Honeyghan, Hodkinson, Laing and Mckenzie. (long before the greed of subscription channels)

Paul likes to see fairness for fighters and fans in terms of value and money and lists his all time favourite pugilists as Marvin Hagler, Kirkland Laing,Thomas Hearns, Larry Holmes and Nigel Benn.

Phil Lindsay

Phil Lindsay's picture

Phil has been a boxing fan for 30 years, ever since he saw Tommy Hearns take on Sugar Ray Leonard at Caesars Palace in 1981. His love of the noble art was nurtured by a steady dose of Nigel Benn and co in the 80's and 90's and he never misses any boxing on TV.

Phil not only loves boxing, he is also a keen sportsman himself and has competed at a good level in a wide range of sports.

Professionally, Phil is self employed, making his living from the websites he has put together, allowing him the free time to follow his passion for writing. He writes and produces his own music and has sang in a couple of bands down the years, the highlight of which was playing at the Newcastle Arena in 2001.
Phil's always looks for the positive side of a story and is looking to get behind British boxing, unlike some of the more negative pundits out there(no names).
Living in Newcastle, Phil is looking to raise the awareness of boxing in the North East of England. If you have any shows planned, be sure to give Phil a shout.

James Howard

James Howard's picture
Another writer from the BBN world to join the team on the launch of the news site, James splits his time between his family in Hertfordshire and his employment in London. Like so many fans of the same age, his passion for the sport was initiated by the Eubank-Benn era. Over the years James has conducted a number of interviews (including David Haye and Joe Cazalghe) and is looking forward to tracking the progress of the next generation of fighters as they step onto the world stage. James can be contacted on jameshoward3@gmail.com

Nelson Stanley

Nelson Stanley's picture

Born at an early age, Nelson comes from a Travelling family, several of whom boxed in the booths at fairgrounds around the UK.

His earliest boxing memory is probably his uncle holding forth that Michael Spinks was going to embarrass Mike Tyson in their bout for the heavyweight championship; from this, he has consistently favoured the slick boxer in classic boxer vs puncher match-ups, and much like his uncle, has consistently been spectacularly wrong.

He has written for a variety of publications, from The Big Issue to Metal Hammer, and currently resides in Bristol.
