Two cracking contests gone as Woodhouse and Doran withdraw
Two potentially cracking small hall fights fell by the wayside today with the withdrawals of Curtis Woodhouse and Tom Doran from their respective fights with Jason Cook and Jez Wilson.
Driffield’s former footballer Woodhouse was due to take on veteran Welsh banger Jason Cook on a David Coldwell promoted card in Birmingham on March 16th.
Unfortunately, the Glyn Rhodes trained light-welterweight has pulled out of the contest as his brother is currently in intensive care in Hull Royal Infirmary.
Understandably, Woodhouse feels he is unable to commit to training during this difficult time.
The withdrawal of Doran from his contest against Wilson is rather less straightforward.
The pair were matched in a final eliminator for the British middleweight title to take place in Bolton on 4th February.
This is the third time the boxers have been slated to meet and it’s fallen through every time. Doran pulled out of the first fight citing a hand injury and on the second occasion the whole proposed bill was scrapped.
“His manager informed me that Tom was pulling out,” Hatton Promotions’ Director of Boxing Richard Poxon told BoxRec News today.
“It’s not for me to comment on any reason why. All I can do is offer apologies to Jez.”
The unlucky trainer is Glyn Rhodes once again. He said, “Apparently Doran’s head’s not right. That’s it, we’re done with him. We’re not getting messed about by him anymore.”
Wilson must be the unluckiest boxer in Britain over recent years, with several fights falling through at late notice.
“It’s got to the point where I just dread the phone ringing in the weeks coming up to a fight,” said the Sheffield-based scrapper. “I just can’t believe it this time. I just didn’t think it was going to happen. It was a final eliminator, and we were both on decent money.”
Rhodes said, “We’ve got a meeting with Hatton Promotions on Thursday. We’ll be pushing to keep the eliminator status and box someone else who the Board will approve for it.
“We’ll have to see who’s out there.”
