Munroe stays at super-bantam after all

Rendall Munroe will remain at super-bantamweight for his next fight after failing to lure a world class bantamweight into the ring.

Britain’s best known binman will now concentrate on dumping Argentinian Jose Saez when he boxes a non-title eight rounder in the Premier Suite at Bolton’s Reebok Stadium on Saturday 4th February.

Leicester’s former European champion showed he belonged at world level in October 2010 when he went the distance with WBC champion Toshiaki Nishioka.

His promoter Ricky Hatton explained: “Due to Rendall’s exceptional performance in his world title challenge in Japan, he has landed himself in the ‘who needs him’ club.

“He's slick, southpaw, so the world champions don't want to know.

“He was moving to bantamweight but we have found the same problems there, such is his class.”

Munroe, 31, has spent this week sparring at Hatton Health and Fitness in Hyde with English bantamweight champion Craig Lyon.

Hatton added: “Rendall needs to keep performing and hopefully his dedication and hard work will eventually pay-off.”

Saez, 36, has a 21-12-6 log.

The bill, which is being televised live by Sky Sports, will be headed by Bury’s Scott Quigg who makes the first defence of his British super-bantamweight crown against former Commonwealth champion Jamie Arthur.
