Witter's career could be over after Canadian catastrophe

Sheffield's former WBC light-welterweight champion Junior Witter lost a ten rounds points decision to Romanian Victor Lupo in Ontario, Canada, last night.

The cards were 97-92, 96-94 and 95-95.

The utterly ludicrous 'vacant WBC International Silver welterweight title' was on the line and the farcical trophy got the contest it deserved.

Witter's sympathisers might point to the fact that he was very rusty after being out since the autumn of 2009 but a performance of this nature - in which he was deducted a point for holding and visited the canvas several times from Lupo's frustrated throws or his own trips - means that this isn't just a loss; it's yet another blow to any TV executive in Britain who wants to argue his case for another chance, even if such a man exists.

It capped a horrendous night for promoter Hennessy Sports who earlier in the night at Wembley Arena saw their men John O'Donnell and Lenny Daws lose their welterweight and light-welterweight British titles on points to Craig Watson and Ashley Theophane respectively.

At least totemic gypsy behemoth Tyson Fury kept their waggon rolling with a devastating fifth round knockout of formely unbeaten Brazilian Marcelo Luis Nascimento.

Full reports to follow from Wembley.
