Welsh the winner

On Saturday night's Brentwood undercard, light-middleweight Martin Welsh had too much for late replacement William Warburton earning a 60-53 grade from Ken Curtis which made it his second victory against the Lancashire lad.

The 30 year-old and undefeated Swanley man, now 9-0, stamped his unshakeable authority on the contest by using a succession of left and right hands to the journeyman’s head and body. Warburton (10st 9lbs) spent the duration of this six rounder with his hands held high without doing too much in the way of throwing them in Welsh’s (10st 12lbs) direction. If any credit goes to Warburton it would be for his resistance in taking continuous heavy punches without folding despite displaying signs of being ruffled.

Welsh has an appearance and style similar to that of British middleweight champion Darren Barker and looks as though he has the ability to reach a similar domestic position.

One interesting note on Warburton’s file is that since he has assumed the role of opponent and despite being just 23, last night was his 20th outing. It goes to show that fighters can contest regularly but it does somewhat increase the chance of less padded and undefeated records. But then how many ‘champions’ would take fights at 24 hours notice and with all advantages in their opponent's corner?

An unsurprisingly low amount, and even if they would be willing I suspect TV wouldn’t be waiting.
