War Machine aims to be back on the battlefield soon

All fights fans love the heavyweights and throughout the duration of his career Larry 'War Machine' Olubamiwo has caught the eye of many boxing fans that have been following his progress with interest.

Larry hasn’t fought since his loss to John McDermott in February but assures his fans he will be back. It’s not that Larry doesn’t want to fight - the chances just haven’t been there.

“After the loss against McDermott I had a break for a couple of months then started to get back into training in April. The last few months have been really frustrating for me. First I was told I would be out in September then it was October and the fight has not been sorted yet.

"I have been training hard for so long now I feel it’s gone a bit stale, but I need to keep in training for when I get my fight date. I got to such a good level of fitness and I really don’t want to lose it."

Losing to a good fighter like John McDermott is no disgrace but after that fight Larry thought it was time for a change in personnel. “Since my loss I have changed my coach and now I am with David Pereira and have got a new strength conditioning coach and between us we seem to have come up with a good plan.”

Larry is well renowned for his physique and had been accused by some fans of having too much muscle mass on his huge 6’4” frame. He was been tweaking his weight and expects to see positive results with the new nutritional regime in place.

"My weight has come down a bit, I wasn’t fat before but now my aim is to try and come back just below 18 stone which I was on target for until I got the flu and haven’t been able to train for a couple of weeks. I feel my stamina has gone through the roof, I think before sub-consciously I wasn’t confident I could last ten hard rounds but now I know I can."

Looking at Larry you could be forgiven for thinking that he relied on his power, even Larry was in that mindset but that’s something he wants to change. “I have been concentrating a lot more on the technical side of boxing recently, I am not bad mouthing my old coach in any shape of form but we seemed to concentrate on my power rather than on the technical side of the sport. For the fight with John I went in with the wrong game plan, power is not the be all and end all of the sport but I was made to feel that was the case, now there is a totally different emphasis on my boxing. I know I have got power; I don’t need to worry about that, now I’m working on other things."

The main thing is that Larry hasn’t fallen out of love with boxing.

“Most importantly I am really enjoying it again. Before I was just thinking about achieving things but you have to remember why you are here in the first place and that has to be because you enjoy boxing.”

Larry is hoping an announcement on his next bout will be made soon - watch this space.
