Unbeaten Doran ready for visit of Smoking Jez
'Smoking' Jez Wilson (pictured) has been lined-up as the next opponent for Connah’s Quay light-middleweight Tom Doran.
The Shotton-based fighter will be looking to stretch his unbeaten record to 11 wins against the durable Sheffield fireman (8-1-1) when they meet at the Newport Centre on November 26.
(The pair were due to meet on Kell Brook's recent undercard but Doran pulled out citing a hand injury - Ed.)
It should be a good match.
Doran’s trainer Shane Thomas said he was confident the 24-year-old would be back to his best after his recent hand injury. He told BoxRec News: “Tom’s got five weeks left till his fight with Wilson and I’ve never seen him so focused and fit this far out before.
“He’s really going for it this time. Tom started sparring last Saturday with Prince Arron had a really good six rounds - he did very well.
“He’ll be sparring with Denton Vassell this week, which will be good preparation for the Wilson fight. He’s really got the bit between his teeth now that his hand is better.”
Meanwhile, Thomas had plenty of praise for three of his other charges, Paul 'Discoball' Davies, from Prestatyn, Cameron Halfpenny (Mold) and Colwyn Bay’s Lee Quinn, who all fought earlier this month.
Davies eased to a 40-37 victory against veteran Kristian Light, while Quinn and Halfpenny also won their opening bouts. Thomas said: “I was made up after the night. Paul got beat last time in the first round, so since then he has been out training and boxing out of his skin.
“Cameron is only 18 so there was a lot of pressure. He was a little nervous before the bout but he stepped up in the second round. He has plenty of time to show his potential.
“Lee fought like a seasoned pro; they were all excellent.”
