Tony Owen moves to 10-0 on Sunday afternoon York Hall card
Micky Helliet-managed Tony Owen improved to 10-0 on Left Jab Promotions' latest instalment of Sunday boxing at the York Hall as he outpointed solid and rugged Czech journeyman Araik Sachbazjan over six rounds at lightweight. It was a very stern test for the bricklayer from Carshalton; Sachbazjan had previously shared the ring with Siarhei Guliakevich, Matt Zegan (twice) and present IBF\WBA king Yuriorkis Gamboa.
Whilst never looking truly comfortable with the assignment, Owen managed to use his height and reach advantages enough of the time to keep the contest safely out of the visitor’s reach on the score card. Araik perpetually wanted to come in close and hook the taller house fighter.
By the third, the contest had turned into a real tear up. When Sachbazjan connected with his left hook in close, a reaction could be clearly seen in Tony’s legs. However, Owen was catching the majority of the incoming leather on his gloves as he found the space for those straight punches that were to prove decisive on the score card. At the close, Bob Williamson’s tally read 60-55 in Owen’s favour.
Why not match Owen against known quantity Ryan Barrett who also fought on this afternoon’s bill?
Kris Agyei-Dua made a winning start to his licensed career as he pipped brave Costas Osben 38-37 over four rounds at middle. Agyei-Dua had a nightmare start as he was floored by a right hand in the opener was shocked his legion of fans into stunned silence. Although he had his man wobbly, Costas failed to press home his advantage and go for the finish. Despite being open defensively, Kris managed to connect with right hands set up by jabs in the second and then used his height and reach well in the third to compound his advantage.
Costas lost the final session on my card as he walked forward into too many shots.
Wickford’s 31-year-old Danny Brown made a successful debut at middleweight as he shut out Woking’s Hayden Chick over four rounds. Brown, trained by Jason Rowland, appears to be a fairly useful southpaw with a sound workrate. He is capable of throwing squalls of shots from a southpaw stance. In addition, he appeared relaxed under pressure as when Hayden attempted to come forward he timed his punches well as to maximise their effect.
