The 'Sweeney Storm' coming to both sides of the Irish Sea

On Saturday night, fight fans on both sides of the Irish Sea will have have their eyes firmly fixed on the Paul McCloskey – Breidis Prescott fight card in Belfast. However, Irish light-heavyweight Michael ‘The Storm’ Sweeney (10-2-1) will be topping a card at Hove Town Hall, Brighton, in an eight rounder with Sheffield's former Commonwealth title challenger Billy Boyle (13-11), on the inaugural show of Assassin Promotions.

Interestingly, Sweeney also revealed that he will fighting in regular shows in Ireland under the new Assassin Promotions banner. “Assassin Promotions in Brighton are running the first of many shows, I'm going to be working with Assassin from now on. Kaz Evans and Jay Morris [from Assassin Promotions] are both passionate about boxing and have a young, fresh approach. They will be putting shows in Ireland regularly, the first one being in November or December.”

Sweeney is certainly not looking past his next opponent though.

“Billy Boyle has been around a bit. I'm looking forward to this one. I have sparred with top guys, like Arthur Abraham, Chad Dawson, Wladimir Klitschko, so this fight wont faze me. But every fight I take with full respect."

There have been whispers that Sweeney is in line to fight for a major title, but The Storm was reluctant to release the full details of that assignment.

“I have been in training for 12 weeks now as the big fight is just around the corner, I can’t say too much as for now. Just keep winning and keeping busy is the key.”

Sweeney has been training in Rosmuc in Connemara, Galway for the past four weeks with former world title challenger, Sean Mannion. In the past Sweeney has fought at cruiserweight but he is determined to stick with his more natural weight of light heavy.

“Once I fight in the UK I'm ready to take big names as there are big names in my weight there so watch out UK - The Storm Sweeney's coming!”

Other fights on the proposed card are: Nicky Jenman v Duncan Cottier, Ross Payne v TBA, Alex Gibbons v TBA.
