Schaefer threatens Golden Boy boycott of Sky Sports after Khan snub
Amir Khan has claimed that Sky Sports turned down his fight with Zab Judah and also nixed a potential fight in the UK against unification fight against Timothy Bradley. As a result, Khan's US promoters Golden Boy Promotions, have said that this snub will lead to the main British boxing broadcaster having to 'cut ties' with the rest of their stable.
Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy, told The Telegraph that if Sky rejected Khan, they would effectively be rejecting all their fighters.
"We are a family. Cut ties with Khan and you cut ties with the entire group of fighters. Mark my words. In 18 months Britain will have the best pound for pound fighter in the world. And his name will be Amir Khan."
One suspects that ties, if cut, will be knotted back up quite quickly if the money is right.
Khan said, "We talked to Sky and they didn't want the [Tim] Bradley or Judah fights. We were willing to bring Bradley to the UK too," said Khan. "We don't have answers as to why they're not interested. I'll just have to win fights and prove them wrong. Hopefully they'll come knocking on my door. I've got some big fights coming up - I want to be, pound for pound, the best in the world.
"I don't know if it's me or if they don't enjoy my boxing. I think I have the most exciting skills in the country. They showed my fight with Dmitri Salita. I would have thought this was a better contest than that."
Khan's contest against Judah in Las Vegas on July 23rd will be shown by Primetime - the PPV broadcaster who showed Khan's defence against Paul McCloskey after the proposed Sky broadcast went belly up.
