Saturday's PPV show suffers huge blow as bill topper Braehmer pulls out
Germany's WBO light-heavyweight champion Juergen Braehmer has withdrawn from his title defence against Nathan Cleverly this Saturday.
The fight was set to top a bill at London's O2 Arena, to be shown via pay-per-view on Sky Box Office.
It is reported that Braehmer suffered a cut several days ago in training which has since re-opened.
With the fight being only one of two really competitive (on paper) matches - the other being James DeGale v George Groves for the British super-middleweight title - some fans who had shelled out a lot of money for tickets before the full bill was announced had already been complaining vociferously on forums that they weren't getting value for money.
This will only add to their displeasure.
Hopefully the promoter will offer a refund for customers who had paid to see a 'world' title fight - though it's believed that a replacement for Braehmer is being frantically sourced for a fight that would see Nathan Cleverly upgraded to full-fat champion making a first defence. Crazy.
After the farcical build up to Amir Khan v Paul McCloskey, this is yet another blow to Sky and their PPV model.
DeGale v Groves is an intriguing and highly anticipated fight but let's be clear about this - it's a match between two novice pros, albeit talented ones, for a domestic title.
Hardly the stuff that PPV is made for.
