The Roberts Report

Well, things seem to be buzzing in boxing world as we speak. The two biggest fights to be made, should be made, haven’t been made and seemingly for reasons no one can fathom can’t be made. Britain has four world champs; the game is alive and kicking. So with that in mind I thought I would cast my mind over all things pugilistic to come up with some observations, thoughts, tidbits if you like - read on and enjoy!

Amir Khan – the new Naz?

And I don’t mean in a good sense, sacking Alex Ariza who was an integral part in his recent success; for Ariza read Brendan Ingle. 'No one wants to fight me,' whines Amir. That’s maybe because you are promising to pay peanuts to anyone that does. For Paul McCloskey read Michael Brodie. The plan is to build Amir into a summer showdown with Timothy Bradley, a solid fighter recognised as the major threat at the same weight, will it be for Tim Bradley read Marco Antonio Barrera? We all know how that one turned out...Sort it out Amir before its too late and British fans are left to bemoan another unfulfilled talent because of hubris induced stupidity.

Tony Bellew – the people’s champ?

Top man Tony and avid Boxreccer has bucked the trend and has agreed to a re-match with a man who stuck him on his rear end in his last fight. Fair play to that man, let's hope more follow suit.

Money really does seem to be the biggest motivator in life

I am not knocking this, just stating what I believe to be fact. Let me explain. Fighter goes on popular satellite-based magazine show to state that ‘I can’t make 140 anymore’. Fast forward a week and the promise of some wedge and a title shot. ‘140 is easy, I can make that no problem’. Or words to that effect. A word of caution here. Mr Witter, as much as you have paid your dues, chasing the pound and the glory in this case at the expense of the rest of your career? That’s one sure fire way of de-railing a comeback.

Tyson Fury

Good move getting Manny on board, now please just lose the moobs and let’s see the undoubted talent come out ok?

Barney Francis/Adam Smith/Carl Froch

You can see where this one’s going, come on guys let's sort it out. We want our most deserving world champ on Sky. Hey Barney, get a move on it's not like you have had anything else to occupy your time recently at Sky towers is it...

Ringside

Quality programme, nothing else to say.

Prizefighter is irrelevant?

Well apparently so, especially when someone called Dickinson wins it. In what smacks of pugilistic snobbery ‘non Repton boy’ or ‘non Manchester gym boy’ Travis Dickinson has been damned with faint praise since winning the latest version of Prizefighter. May I be the first one to give Travis the credit he is due. He beat three fresh fighters with relative ease and lets not forget is still a 10 fight novice himself. ‘I am looking past Dickinson, I want McIntosh,' said Tony Dodson.  I would suggest if Dodson is so convinced he would beat Dickinson that he proves it in the ring – this would be a good crossroads fight for both. Would Dodson win? I am not so sure, Dickinson looks a tough nut and Dodson, as well as others would be well served to acknowledge that fact.

James DeGale

The absolute business, would beat Sartison and Magee tomorrow. And finally...

David Haye/Wladimir Klitschko

We don’t care who wants to come to the ring last, or who wants to wear green gloves, or who wants who to dance, or who wants 50.00000000001% of the purse, yadda yadda yadda. Look, just get in the ring and fight – it’s what you’re paid to do.

Until next time, keep slugging.
