Ricky Burns' manager advises against Broner bout

By Tom Walker: Ricky Burns, Scotland’s WBO super-featherweight champion may well be on the verge of relinquishing the title he won against Roman Martinez last September and has defended three times with style, according to his manager and much respected Scottish promoter Alex Morrison.

Coatbridge’s champion has an offer of a defence in Cincinnati against Adrien Broner the much heralded mandatory opponent in November. However, Alex is nothing if not perceptive when it comes to what is the right road to take for the likeable Burns.

Morrison's acumen in boxing points to the problems of making 9st 4lbs as boxers age, with the examples of both Scott Harrison and Alex Arthur cited.

Burns is 28 years old and it was always planned for him to move up a division.

“Nothing is signed or sealed, but I am advising him against the fight,” says Morrison and, according to him, Frank Warren apparently agrees with Alex that money isn’t everything.

Burns will fight before the end of this year irrespective if he moves up a weight or not, with Morrison planning an assault on a second world title belt at lightweight at some stage.
