Reid steps in to rescue Economides fight

After a day that threatened to turn into a disaster, it has been announced that Chester’s very own ‘Spartan’ Paul Economides (11-2) will face off against Aberdeen hard man Gavin Reid (6-9-1 3KO) over ten rounds for the British Masters featherweight title on Saturday at York Hall, Bethnal Green.

Economides had been scheduled to face off against former Commonwealth title challenger Isaac Nettey of Ghana. Sadly, Nettey was unable to obtain a visa and the fight was scrapped, leaving Economides without an opponent.

Thankfully, Reid was willing to step in. This is hardly surprising from a man who has fought the big guns like Ryan Walsh, Carl Frampton and Scott Quigg. He also holds a knockout victory over former British title contender John Donnelly, who he dispatched in four brutal rounds.

Reid has gained a reputation of a real gatekeeper in the division. If you are serious talent you will beat him. But if you are not quite up to the job then he will beat you, and in much likelihood knock you out.

Economides, though realising the task in front of him, is confident of victory.

“He looks strong and exciting and is the perfect opponent to make for a great fight. But when I win this it will send out a message to the top ten. Paul Economides is here and he means business.”

This fight has the makings of one of the small hall fights of the year. Some will question the sense of taking a fight this dangerous at short notice. Those around Economides however know how much he has improved in the last year and the camp are confident a second title is just a few days away.

For Economides, this could be the fight that thrusts him into the big time. Even the biggest 'Spartan' fans however realise he may just have to go to hell and back to get through this battlle.
