Referee asked to explain Cox v Sai officiating
The British Boxing Board of Control (BBBoC) has asked referee Mark Green to explain his officiating of the light-middleweight Commonwealth title fight between Jamie Cox v Obodai Sai.
Most viewers felt Sai had been hard done by when it came to the judges' tallies - all of whom scored narrowly for Cox in a contest he looked to have lost - but just as much outrage was expressed over the seemingly lenient stance taken by referee Green.
Cox landed several blows below the Ghanaian's belt. Indeed, referee Green deducted two points from the challenger, one in the fifth round and one in the last but many viewers felt Cox should have been disqualified at some point, allowing Sai to go home with his belt intact if not his family allowance.
Insult was added to injury when the judges then saw fit to award Cox the contest and the championship. Mr Green's appearance before the BBBoC will take place on Wednesday 12th October.
Hon Secretary of the Commonwealth Boxing Council, Simon Block, said, "The Directors of the CBC will await the outcome of that hearing prior to deciding their own course of action in respect of the controversy arising from that contest."
