Ref gets knuckles rapped for Prizefighter scoring
Gillingham referee Ian John-Lewis has been disciplined by the British Boxing Board of Control for his seemingly inexplicable scoring in last month's Prizefighter tournament.
John-Lewis handed in a 30-28 card for Joe Ainscough against Wayne Reed - despite Ainscough being dropped and dominated in the third round.
A statement from the Board issued yesterday reads, "Referee Mr. Ian John-Lewis appeared before the Stewards of the Board regarding his performance at the recent Prizefighter tournament in Liverpool on Wednesday, 23rd March 2011.
"Following Mr. John-Lewis’ evidence, the Stewards have issued a severe reprimand and advised of future conduct."
John-Lewis is a nice chap by all reports and everyone makes mistakes. But this one needed addressing and the Board has done that.
As Reed's trainer, Glyn Rhodes, would no doubt observe, it won't get his lad his four grand back. Yet Matchroom might give Reed another shout next time the franchise is making appearance near his weight.
