Purdy wants Vassell rematch after he repeats Watson win

Lee Purdy hopes successfully defending his British welterweight crown against Craig Watson this weekend will book a return clash against Denton Vassell. Colchester's Purdy narrowly lost on points to Vassell in a Commonwealth title challenge last year, but in April shocked Watson to become British champion.

On Saturday (July 16) he bids to prove his fifth round stoppage win against Watson was no fluke in a rematch at Oldham Sports Centre.

Purdy, 24, said: "I would love to get another go at Denton if I beat Craig. I am sure I can avenge that setback.

"I have no complaints about the decision in the first fight against him, but I hadn't been with my trainer Tony Sims for very long and I wasn't where I am now mentally and physically.

"I now know that I am capable of beating Denton."

The Watson win triggered a three-fight agreement with Hatton Promotions and with Vassell in the same stable a return is a real possibility. Purdy, beaten just twice in 18 fights added: "I am surprised that the rematch has happened so quickly and I think it is a bad move.

"I won the first fight against Watson so there is no reason for me to have any doubt about the outcome."
