Prospect Promotions Serve Up Another Good Offering

Having to be in Aberdeen to conduct the weigh-in for the title fight on the Friday, a very big vote of thanks to Wull Downie of Newarthill for this unabridged summary of the show in Wishaw on Friday evening. Airdrie debutant David Brophy opened this Prospect Promotions bill in Wishaw Sports Centre with a good 40-37 win against Doncaster Light-Heavyweight James Tucker who now drops to 3-34-3, Brophy boxed well behind a tight guard and caught Tucker with stiff jabs on his way in.

The Airdrie man gave a good solid account of himself in his first paid fight but Tucker was always game and never let young Brophy have it all his own sharing round 4 on Referee Kenny Pringles card as Brophy began to tire toward the end of the fight. A good learning fight for David, who is trained and managed by Billy Nelson.

The second contest of the night was an intriging one, on paper at least anyway, as Georgian amateur start Levan Ghvamichava, who is now based in Cork, Ireland under Gary Hyde, was pitted against Hungarian warhorse Laszlo Komjathi 37-33-2 over 6x3 minute rounds in this Light-Welterweight contest. Ghvamichava 1-0 coming into this contest, came out for the first bell looking for Komjathi from the off and peppered the Hungarian with blistering hooks which opened a cut over his left eye. Ghvamichava kept the pressure on Komjathi, who was now shipping some heavy punches, and put his man down for an eight count right on the bell to end the round, Referee Kenny Pringle continued with his count before allowing Komjathi to return to his corner.

The second round was no easier for the Hungarian, who has been in with no fewer than four former and current world champions during his career, with Ghvamichava again landing some very heavy punches on the Hungarian eventually forcing Mr Pringle to halt the contest in round two to save Komjathi further punishment. The Georgian looks a very good prospect and the fans here tonight should remember that they were watching a future champion in the making in Levan Ghvamichava.

Contest three saw popular Stranraer Light-Middleweight Paul Allison enter the ring in his third paid contest in a rematch of his first fight against Lincoln southpaw Rick Boulter 1-7-2. Allison took the fight to Boulter, landing a right hook to Boulter's head that shook the Lincolnshire man, Allison pushed forward in an effort to keep Boulter under pressure at every opportunity but Rick kept on the move and tried not to get involved in a toe to toe battle with Allison through-out the 6x2 minute rounds. Boulter tried to steal single shots and keep on the move but that tactic only worked briefly and earned him a round on Mr Pringle's card but more often than not got caught on the ropes, allowing Allison to land some heavy punches that stunned him momentarily. Another good win for the Stranraer man that now sees his record moving up to 3-0.

Local man Chris "Stainless" Steele was next up in a 6x2 Light-Welterweight contest against Middlesborough's Phil Boyle 1-6. Steele in his second professional contest won the opening round by using his longer reach and boxing behind a high guard, catching the come forward Boyle with long jabs and a stiff straight right hand that caught Boyle flush on the chin. Steele took the second round by using the same tactics but Boyle started to gain momentum in the third as Steele started to tire and drop his hands, allowing Boyle the opportunity to push forward and catch Steel with hooks, Steele was in survival mode until the bell ended the round.

In the fourth Boyle came looking for Steele and caught the Wishaw man with a hard right hook that had Steele shaken and forcing him to hold on until his head had cleared, the fifth was much the same as Boyle tried to land more heavy punches as by this point Steele looked to have nothing left in the tank. in the last round Steele got some of his composure back and tried to keep the oncoming Boyle at bay with his jab but the round became very scrappy as Steele tired and had to hold on to see the round out finding himself very fortunate to get the decision 58-57 on Mr Pringle's card.

The final bout of the evening saw Wishaw's Kenny Davidson 1-1-1, making his comeback after a three-year lay-off against Newark Super-Middleweight Jamie Norkett 3-18 in this 6x2 contest. Davidson won all 6 rounds (60-54) on Mr Pringle's card and gave a good showing of himself after such a long lay-off, the bout was evenly matched and Davidson was worth his win for his work rate alone.

All in all another good, value for money, small hall show from Scotland's latest promoter and former professional referee Paul Graham of Prospect Promotions, and I'm sure the fans will certainly look forward to his next venture in the area.
