Munika miles over at weigh in - Chester title fight in doubt
From the moment Geoffrey Munika threatened to bite Chris Goodwin’s ear in a recent Boxrec News article, there was a real sense that today's weigh in would be explosive. This proved to be the case as the pair met for the first time in a crowded Chester shopping centre, but not for the reasons that were anticipated.
After turning up fifteen minutes late for the weigh in Munika, who defends his International Masters lightweight title tomorrow came in at 9st 13.5 lbs, a full four and a half pounds over the lightweight limit to the astonishment of the crowd.
At the time of writing Munika was desperately trying to work off the excess weight in the home fighter Goodwin’s Chester base.
Goodwin on the other hand came in at a lean 9st 7.5 lbs and is ‘in the condition of his life.’
What happens next is anyone’s guess, but for a fighter to come all the way from Kenya and be that much overweight is pretty poor. Even if he was struggling and desperately trying to cut weight, you would think the promoters ‘Fight Options’ should have been informed.
The weigh in for the British Masters clash between Shaun Doherty and Paul Economides went without a hitch. Doherty came in at 8st 10lbs whilst a ripped Economides weighed in at 8st 9.5lbs. The atmosphere was electric as the fighters squared off. Economides is looking to get his first pro title, whilst Bradford man Doherty is determined to right what he considers to be two injustices in his previous razor thin points losses to Economides.
What will happen with Munika nobody knows, but Goodwin will be desperate for a title shot, he has worked too hard not to get one. If it is snatched from him now it will be a travesty. It is just a case of waiting and seeing. (It might be the case that the title is on the line, but only for Goodwin - Ed.)
