McMillan shows a sting in the Thistle

Many years ago I was the Scottish team manager with a team of youngsters travelling by bus (the joys of amateur boxing!) all the way to South Wales for the Four Nations Youth Championships. One young man stood out both in terms of ability and all-round demeanour and that was Gary McMillan from Edinburgh.

Fast forward a decade and young McMillan like so many others joined the paid ranks with Morrison Promotions. Big Alex’s faith in the stable he’s gathered was amply demonstrated with his latest dinner show in the Thistle Hotel in Glasgow on Friday last.

McMillan is a stylish southpaw who has a dig to match the artistry, and duly registered a seventh round stoppage in a fight scheduled for ten rounds for the British Masters welterweight title with Martyn King of Cumbria.

King did give the Masters title shot his all but was outgunned by the bigger shots of McMillan, who improves with every outing. He should be in the mix for more prestigious straps soon.

The balance of this fine night of boxing had Sean Watson finally make his debut as a professional boxer with a points win over Kristian Laight whilst demonstrating a bit of power behind his fists.

Jonathon Slowey was simply too good for Robin Deakin and comfortably won every round in his points victory.

Michael Roberts continued unbeaten in his paid career with another points win over perennial tough guy Youssef Al Hamidi, at the same time showing the hand speed and good combinations we all knew he had.

All in all it was a good show with tangible evidence that the production line of Scottish boxers is in a good state with the latest goods off of it.
