McLevy hoping to get in the Scottish title mix

Rising star Jamie McLevy has been told to shake off the ring rust and blast himself into title contention. The Whiteinch welterweight returns to action after a year out injured at Scotstoun Sports Campus on Saturday, March 5 and an impressive victory could land him a Scottish title fight, according to promoter Chris Gilmour.

Former Scottish amateur champ McLevy has reeled off six straight victories since joining the pro ranks and is now homing in on matching his elder brother Steve as a national title holder in both the unpaid and paid codes.

Gilmour said: “Jamie was entering a really exciting phase of his career when he got injured and he’s been out of action for a year to recover.

“It’s a real pity because he had a hugely impressive start to his pro career and had shown he has the ability to go all the way. But he’s now fully fit and desperate to get back a bit of momentum.

“He has made a few mistakes early in his career, but the important thing is he has learned from them and has shown himself to be a much more seasoned pro in his last few fights. If he can quickly shake off the ring rust and show the same form he had before his injury then it won’t be long before he’s ready for a move towards some sort of title shot.

“It could be a Scottish or British Masters title, but he has to take care of business impressively on March 5. It’s important that he doesn’t just win, but wins in style because I want him to prove emphatically that he is ready for a title challenge.”

In the top of the bill, Paisley’s Kris Carslaw defends his British Masters light-middleweight title against Ulsterman Willie Thomson. Undefeated welterweight Eddie Doyle of Glenboig will both be looking to stretch his winning run to seven on the undercard, whilst former Prizefighter super-bantamweight finalist Paul McElhinney of Newlands and Motherwell’s Stephen Sharoudi are also in action. And the seven fight bill will be completed by former multi-titled amateur star Robert ‘Rocky’ Wright, who made a successful debut at last month’s St Andrews Sporting Club Burns Night.

Tickets are priced at £40 (reserved seating) and £30 (unreserved seating) and are available on 0141 810 5700 or through the venue and all the boxers on the bill.
