McGoldrick gets belated Commonwealth gold after winner fails drug test

It’s such a shame Sean McGoldrick will be remembered as the man who won a Commonwealth gold medal when a drugs cheat was exposed. The Welshman is a class act and boxed brilliantly to make the final last October, where he lost to Manju Wanniarachchi.

The Sri Lankan bantamweight was sensationally stripped of his medal last Sunday after he failed a second doping test for a banned steroid. The Commonwealth Games Federation’s (CGF) Federation Court said Wanniarachchi’s results at the Delhi Games would be nullified as a result.

McGoldrick becomes the third Welsh gold medallist from last year’s Games, joining 400m hurdler Dai Greene and lawn bowls player Robert Weale.

He is a quality fighter and has a bright future ahead of him. Here’s hoping he can put this whole debacle behind him and enjoy the victory, despite the furore surrounding it.
