McCrory is out for the Cash

A teenage hot-shot known as ‘The Tyneside Tyson’ has got Geordie legend Glenn McCrory out of retirement in the countdown to First Team Promotions’ first show of the year. Their show at the Tower Ballrooms in Birmingham on Friday, January 21 features the professional debut of light-heavyweight hope Cash Hussain. His career is being masterminded by former IBF cruiserweight champion McCrory after he rescued the teenage tear away from prison and put him on the path to boxing’s big time.

McCrory was also Mike Tyson’s chief sparring partner when the ‘baddest man on the planet’ was in his destructive prime and revealed he got back in the ring to swap punches with Hussain. Glenn retired in July 1993 after missing out in his bid to reclaim the IBF championship from Al Cole and hadn’t pulled on a pair of gloves – until last week.

“I had a bottle of wine the night before,” said McCrory, “and that wasn’t the best preparation! I might have to take it more seriously next time.

“I wouldn’t get back in the ring for just anyone, but Cash is like a son to me. We are so close and I just wanted to help him out. He wasn’t fazed by getting in the ring with me, but then he never is ! He has no fear.

“He has a massive heart and just wants to murder everyone at the moment! He reminds me of what I was like years ago. Cash just wants to fight and win titles.

“He used to pester me to take him to the gym when he was a kid and I can’t keep him out of the gym now !”

As an amateur, Hussain won the Junior ABA Class B title at 91kgs in 2009 – thrashing touted Londoner Luke Robinson from Haringey ABC in the final – and McCrory said: “Cash really wanted to go to the Olympics and bring a gold medal back to the North East. But he lost some bad decisions and realised how tough that was going to be, so decided to turn professional. I’m really excited.”

McCrory is training Cash and another former world champion, Richie Woodhall, is managing him until Glenn is licensed. Cash should have plenty of support for his pro debut. McCrory reports three busloads of fans will be heading to Birmingham and Hussain also has relatives in the Midlands.

“Everyone loves Cash,” said Glenn.

The First Team Promotions bill also features unbeaten prospects Chris Truman, Duane Parker and Rhys Davies and a Black Country derby between former Midlands Area welterweight champion Kevin McCauley and Wayne Downing. Parker, from Woodville near Burton on Trent, has boxing in his blood. His father, Darren, boxed ring legend Chris Eubank and Duane is being steered towards a title fight in 2011. His manager Errol Johnson says Parker will meet the winner of the clash between Jamie Ball and Andrew A Lowe for the vacant Midlands Area light-middleweight championship in Walsall on Saturday, February 26.

Truman, a busy, well-schooled lightweight from Aston, will also be hoping to force his way into championship class this year, along with cruiserweight puncher Rhys Davies, known as ‘The Chocolate Warrior.’
