Kerry Kayes takes boxers to visit Craig Bellamy's new gym
Feisty footballer Craig Bellamy has been known to engage in the odd row. Unsurprising then that he's a boxing fan and, indeed, a follower of combat sports. Now he’s opened Cardiff Combat, an MMA (mixed martial arts) gym in his home city, to give local youngsters and professionals a boost. He's called in Kerry Kayes, well known nutritionist and former adviser to Ricky Hatton, to give the benefit of his experience.
Bellamy first met Kayes (founder of the well known CNP range) when he was at Manchester City FC. The club is one of several in the Premier League that tap into Kayes’ expertise, so Bellamy already had plenty of experience of the CNP range of sports supplements.
Of course, Kayes is well known in the boxing and MMA worlds, too – he’s been responsible for sports nutrition for many top athletes, mixing with the likes of Rampage Jackson and famously helping Hatton shed the pounds and win world titles at the height of his career.
Kayes’ brief was to talk to gym members about incorporating proper nutrition into their diet and training schedule, in order to maximise their performance. He also brought along some very special guests in the shape of British and European champion John Murray, with brother and ex-Olympian Joe Murray and fellow boxer Anthony Crolla, plus UFC fighter Paul Kelly, all of whom spent time chatting to the Cardiff fight fans.
“Nutrition is vital for fighters in every discipline,” says Kayes. “They put their body through intense trauma, both training and competing, and need to recover quickly. One of the key areas to focus on is increasing protein intake, to aid muscle repair, but they’ve got to be the right sort of proteins – it’s worth paying extra for quality.”
Kayes has put together a package of sports supplements for athletes involved in combat sports. His ‘boxing stacks’ feature a selection of CNP products designed to help boost stamina, repair muscle and enhance performance.
