Exclusive - Jeff Thomas' big day - a new son and a place in the Prizefighter line up
After a brief though relentless social media campaign, BoxRec forum poster Jeff Thomas has been given his wish and been included in the next Prizefighter line up.
Seeing as his second son, Rocco, was born in the early hours of this morning, it's certainly been a day to remember for the Blackpool fitness guru.
"Getting in is absolutely amazing and it's definitely as a result of the campaign," said Jeff, speaking from the maternity ward where his son (weighing in at 5lbs 12oz) was born at 2.44am today.
Through his membership of the BoxRec and East Side Boxing forums as well as his harnessing of social networking site Twitter, Jeff gathered support for his inclusion in Matchroom's next tournament, Light Middleweights II which is headed by Takaloo and will take place at York Hall on Thursday 15th September.
"I'd just like to thank everyone for supporting me and Matchroom for giving me the chance.
"I'm 29 years old, haven't been that active, I'm not Manny Pacquiao or Floyd Mayweather so this is basically a great opportunity for an average guy.
"I'll have a right go at it - I wouldn't be fearful of a match with any of the line up over six rounds, never mind three.
Thomas, a personal trainer, has now got two weeks of paternity leave where his partner no doubt will be pleased to hear that this break will "allow me to get fired right into training". Seriously though, Jazzy Jeff will certainly be taking an active role in Rocco's early development.
"I can do the early morning feeds and then go out to training. I can also choose my hours of work so that will help."
And if Rocco thinks he's got some name to live up to, he only needs to ask his older brother for advice...seven year-old Joe Louis!
To confirm that the gods are aligning in Jeff's favour, he's also on a break from his university course, where he's entering his final year of a Business Management degree.
"I think I'll surprise people with my speed and power.
"This is my world title fight, really."
