Dirty Derry aiming for a Goodwin

Big time boxing returns to Chester with a bang on April 2nd, when Derry Matthews squares off against hometown favourite Chris Goodwin in a match that could thrust the Liverpool man towards a British title shot.

The bout, which will be for the vacant WBF Intercontinental lightweight strap (Oh my Lord - Ed.), is promoted by Stephan Vaughan and will be staged at the Northgate Arena.

Matthews (26-5 -12KO), fresh off a fantastic performance in 'Prizefighter’ and a revenge victory over Scott Lawton, can afford no slip ups as he races towards that domestic title fight. Lose now and questions will be raised as to where he can go from here.

For Goodwin (12-1-1), this will be his first venture into title class and a huge step up in levels. But on home soil, and with a vocal home crowd behind him, some are picking Goodwin, a stylist with skills to burn, to maybe threaten the upset.

Also on the bill will be Chester fighters Paul Economides, fresh off a defeat in his Welsh title fight and Joe Lovell, looking to impress further after his scintillating performance on his debut in December. Prestatyn born featherweight ‘Discoball’ Paul Davies will be looking to move to 4-0 as continues to learn the game. Liverpool pugilists Rocky Fielding and Graham Delehedy will also feature.

BoxRec News will be at the forefront of covering the shows build up over the next six weeks.
