Da Buture's Fright for DeGale as he gets Euro title shot
One would have thought James DeGale had actually won his match against George Groves in May, rather than being on the losing end of a close points decision.
The former British champion has landed himself a challenge for the European title, scheduled for September 17th. He'll be champion Piotr Wilczewski's first defence, and a voluntary one for the Pole.
Wilczewski won the title by stopping Amin Asikainen in the eleventh round in March, in Asikainen's home country of Finland.
What's a little unclear is that the EBU rules supposedly state that a boxer cannot fight for their title after coming off a loss - this was the reported reason as to why John Murray gave up his European title so he could box Kevin Mitchell (whose last fight was a defeat against Michael Katsidis).
Presumably then, DeGale is going to have to fit in a warm up bout before this date. If this is the case, the EBU have been very generous/lax in sanctioning DeGale to fight for their championship...or the rule - if it is indeed the rule - has gone out of the window.
