Commonwealth board refuses to sanction Big Larry v Big John

The Commonwealth Boxing Council (CBC) has refused to sanction a proposal that Saturday's match between Larry Olubamiwo and John McDermott be made for their title.

Honorary Secretary of the CBC, Simon Block, spoke with BoxRec News this afternoon.

"I discussed the possibility of a vacant Commonwealth Title match with Dean Powell. Firstly, Derek Chisora has not vacated (up to this moment).

"Secondly, the CBC would not approve the proposed match for the Title if it did become vacant."

Presumably the approach was made in order that the proposed York Hall card would fulfil Sky Sports' criteria that their broadcasts must be headlined by a match contested for a 'major' title.

At the time of writing, no announcement has been made as to whether the bill will still be televised or not.
