Alvarez enjoys landslide points win over Hatton
Matthew Hatton lost a wide unanimous points decision to 20 year-old Mexican Saul Alvarez in their WBC light-middleweight title fight at the Honda Center in Anaheim last night.
All three judges gave it 119-108.
The only point Alvarez lost was one deducted for an illegal blow in the seventh round but the new champion's dominance was still reflected in the fact that Hatton didn't win that session (it was scored 9-9).
The tone was set early on with Alvarez landing several head shots in round one and marking up the Mancunian's face from round two.
"He's a fantastic fighter, but he was just too big," Hatton told Sky Sports. "He never really hurt me. It was just a size difference. I want to go back down to my natural weight at welterweight, and hopefully I'll get another shot there.
"When you get an opportunity to fight for a title, you can't turn it down."
"He's a good fighter, " observed Alvarez. "People criticised him, but he was a tough guy.
"This was a great experience for me. This was my first world title shot, but it's the first of many, and I'll win them all for my fans. I want to fight the biggest and the best. I'm going to be the next big name from Mexico."
