Will Matt Skelton be in Prizefighter?
Last week Matt Skelton’s name was paired with Ali Adams during the Prizefighter heavyweight draw, but according to his local newspaper Matt may not even be in the tournament.
Skelton last appeared on a Matchroom show in July when defeating Lee Swaby in which he weighed a career heaviest of 18st 2lbs.
This was seen as a potential warm up for the popular tournament and Skelton admits he spoke with them about a possible appearance but nothing was final.
Speaking to Bedford’s Times and Citizen he said “They (Matchroom) got in touch with me after I had my fight and wanted to know if I was interested.
“At the time I didn’t think it was the best route for me to go down because sometimes Prizefighter can work against you.
“Having said that if no fights can be arranged, then it’s something to be looked at too because you have to take what comes on offer, I’ve got a meeting with them next week (now this week) and will know more about exactly what is happening then.”
Matt has suffered four defeats (three consecutive stoppages) in his last six outings including losses to then WBA heavyweight champion and the inaugural Prizefighter winner Martin Rogan, suggesting his best days may be behind him.
To his credit since turning professional in 2002 Skelton has exceeded many expectations in claiming the British, Commonwealth and European titles and holds two victories over Michael Sprott, and one over both Danny Williams and John McDermott.
Prizefighter has helped fellow heavyweight Audley Harrison to regain a fighting foot and he is now expected to face WBA heavyweight champion David Haye on November 13th.
Matt, that should be enough to convince you at the ripe young age of a reported 43.
Doesn’t life begin at 40?
