Weaver and Yafai guarantee European bronze medals

Iain Weaver and Khalid Yafai have guaranteed bronze and are through to the semi finals of the European Championships after today's quarter finals. Obed Mbwakongo lost 11-9 to Frenchman Abdelkader Bouhenia despite going into his final round 7-7.

Tomorrow (Wednesday) will see Tommy Stubbs, Gamal Yafai and and Tom Stalker join their Welsh team mate Andrew Selby in a second day of quarter finals.

Tuesday 8th June (Quarter finals day one)

51kg: Khalid Yafai beat Derenik Gizhlaryan (Armenia) 9-1

A fantastic display of discipline and controlled and precise boxing saw Khalid Yafai dominate the Armenian. Kal went behind early on but stayed calm, scoring points in each round with clean accurate shots. First guaranteed bronze medal in the bag, and a semi final bout for the Brummie.

57kg: Iain Weaver beat Oualid Belaoura (France) 12-7

Iain stormed to a 3-0 lead in his quarter final, only to be pegged back to 3-2 by a combination from the Frenchman. A lively second round saw Weaver go into the last with a 7-5 lead. The last round was a battle at times, but with Iain striking cleanly again, the bout was won. Iain is through to the semis and guaranteed a bronze.

81kg: Obed Mbwakongo lost to Abdelkader Bouhenia (France) 11-9

After another active opening round, Obed trailed by a point, 4-3. The second saw more frantic action with Obed and the Frenchman trading blows with scores poised at 7-7 going into the last. Despite a valiant effort from Obed, it wasn't to be and his opponent picked up a couple of points more to go through to the semis.
