Sprott ‘agrees’ to Harrison fight after Williams has change of heart

Michael Sprott is expected to be confirmed as Audley Harrison’s opponent in their rematch for the vacant European heavyweight title at London’s Alexandra Palace on 9 April. Sprott agreed terms with promoters Matchroom yesterday to fight Harrison after British champion Danny Williams had a change of heart.

“Yes, I was down to fight Audley Harrison but I was advised by my trainer Jim McDonnell not to take the match. The last time I fought Audley I only had five days notice and I promised myself I would never do that again! However, my eagerness to get revenge nearly got the better of me,” explained Williams in a brief statement to BoxRec News this morning.

Sprott, who flattened Harrison in the third round when they last met three years ago, is currently in Germany ahead of his six-round tune-up against journeyman Werner Kreiskott on the undercard of Wladimir Klitschko’s WBO mandatory defence against Eddie Chambers on Saturday.

“We’ve done a deal but Michael won't sign for the Harrison fight until after he’s won on Saturday for superstitious reasons incase he gets cut or loses against Kreiskott,” said Sprott’s manager Jim Evans to BoxRec News.

Harrison had been originally scheduled to challenge Poland ’s Albert Sosnowski for the European crown. However, Sosnowski will now face WBC Champion Vitali Klitschko in May.
