Scottish Boxing saddened by the death of top coach
Both codes, professional and amateur boxing in Scotland, are united in grief at the sudden death after a fairly short illness of Archie McKay of Forgewood ABC. In a sport which has a fair share of characters, Archie stood out like a beacon of what a boxing man should aspire to be. He'd trained British champions in both codes and was always encouraging in his charges.
Tommy Gilmour was truly saddened by Archie's death, saying :"Archie was one person of whom you could really say; He was a great guy to be with and is a tremendous loss to boxing in Scotland. Archie was someone for whom praise and plaudits were totally justified, he was just so genuine a man."
In another really nice touch, Archie's coffin will be in the Forgewood club from Thursday at 4 p.m. till 5.15 p.m. on Friday prior to a service in Motherwell Cathedral at 6 p.m.
I'm sure this is where such a great boxing man would have wanted to be! Scottish boxing mourns his passing with deepest sympathy to his family and friends alike.
