Promoter Paul Graham previews his Friday night bill
Promoter Paul Graham gives us the lowdown on his show in Wishaw this Friday night - the first promotion of professional boxing ever to hit the Scottish town since 1946 (according to our records, anyway).
"The most anticipated bout of the evening is between Mark Bett of Wishaw and Cambuslang’s Brian Murphy at light welterweight. Both have indifferent records for different reasons, Bett 5-9-4 and Murphy 2-5-0 but as the saying goes, you don’t need thoroughbreds to have a good race and no one in Scottish boxing can predict a winner from this bout.
"Paul Allison is a debutant from Stranraer. He's the first ever pro boxer from the sea port town and with a 50/50 record as an amateur but tough as nails versus Ric Boulter, a southpaw from Lincoln with three defeats out of six contests. Allison’s enthusiasm in his debut should be enough to outpoint Boulter who is a nice mover but probably enough power to trouble Allison.
"Chris Steel from nearby Coltness is another debutant who, as long as he doesn’t do anything silly, should come through his six-twos against the evergreen Daniel Thorpe. Say what you want about guys with records like Daniel's but our sport would be much worse off without people like him who travel the length of Britain every week taking on all comers, be it debutants or decent kids building their records.
"Willie Thompson (Ballymena) 6-2-1 will have a tough one versus Levan Ghvamichava at welterweight; Ghvamichava had a glittering amateur career as a youth but we all know this is a different world in the pros.
Another debutant from Edinburgh with a glittering amateur career is super-middleweight John Boy McCallum who goes in against tough soldier Phil Townley from Belfast. Townley always gives it a go but McCallum’s speed and power should be enough to get through a tough debut and win on points.
"Ian Millarvie is now of the bill as his management could not agree to a suitable opponent. The BBB of C refused three opponents suggested to them and Millarvie and his management refused two others. Santino Caruna v Michael Harvey at lightweight will make up the sixth bout.
"At £30 and £40ringside for a six fight bill, I feel is excellent value for money especially as I have tried to keep the contests as evenly matched as I can. As this is poppy week and help for hero’s week, I am donating all proceeds from the programme sales to SAAFA."
