Promoter-boxer Barry Hughes’ troubles just won’t take a count
Braveheart Promotions supremo Barry Hughes has not had the best of fortune lately and now he has been detained by police acting under “a proceeds of crime” warrant.
Officers apparently entered the 31-year-old's house in Kilmacolm, Renfrewshire, at 7.30 this morning. It is understood that charges are expected to be brought against him in connection with money laundering and mortgage fraud. Proceeds of crime laws allow police to seize cash and assets they suspect were funded through illegal activity.
About 35 officers were involved in an operation which broke down the door and then removed valuables, including several large screen plasma TVs, DVD players and designer clothes.
The high-profile raid on his property was carried out following a two-month investigation. During the operation, officers used electric wire cutters to get through the garden security gates. Signs were then erected outside with the words: "Strathclyde Police: tackling serious and organized crime".
Hughes arrived at the property at lunchtime after returning from a holiday in Spain and was then detained before being taken to Greenock Police Station.
