Paul's Press Ups

BoxRec News correspondent Paul Foley opens up and shares the week's boxing pages.

Frank Warren hasn’t had the best of weeks with the news that top draw Amir Khan has left his promotional stable for the gold of Oscar De La Hoya and company.

After losing the only world champion on their books, Warren is now said to be looking at getting involved in a whole new ball game, namely football.

Thursday’s Express named Warren as a fighting contender for struggling Conference club Chester City who have been served with a winding-up order by HM Revenue & Customs.

Former club owner Stephen Vaughan said, “I’ve been speaking to possible investors and one in talks has been Frank Warren.”

The small crowds and the unknown names will be a far cry from the packed halls and star showmen.

Has Frank spotted some handy fighters on the team?

Curtis Woodhouse has made the successful transfer from boots to gloves.

Watch out Woodhouse you may not be alone!

While on the subject of khan’s departure, on the same day and in the same paper Niall Hickman said that the signing of Amir Khan by Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions is another step on the path towards world domination for the American who for more than 20 years has been the darling of boxing in the United States.

De La Hoya spoke of some major factors that will help keep boxing off the ropes!

“Having been a fighter myself, I know some of the pitfalls and I know also that boxing has to provide a product which people want to watch.”

Now pull up your seats closer because this is music to boxing fans ears. I like what Oscar has to say.

“We at Golden Boy Promotions want to give them (fans) that by arranging the best versus the best. That is all I want to see because I am first and foremost a boxing fan. That has always been my dream for the sport.”

De la Hoya added “For too long boxing fans have been given too little in the way of the best fighting the best.”

My gripe as a boxing fan is not so much paying to view but rather what I’m paying for.

I don’t mind paying top dollar to see top notch fighters in tip top clashes and condition.

Promoters and TV companies everywhere - listen to a man (Oscar) who took on all-comers.

If you do, guess who wins?

It’s not always the fighter or the promoter.

It’s the fans.

Isn’t that  fighting fair considering they pay?

Speaking of the best fighting the best:

Is he the pound for pound number one fighter or number one ducker?

The Morning Star boxing headline read ',Mayweather ducks fights says Roach'.

Manny Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach was speaking following an extravagant press conference for Manny’s upcoming WBO welterweight title defence against Joshua Clottey on March 13 at the Dallas Cowboys’ stadium in Arlington Texas.

Of course it should have been Manny against Money. (Mayweather)

Freddie knows why that didn’t happen but still wants the bout to be made.

“I want to see Manny kick Mayweather’s backside, but he won’t give us that opportunity.

“He ducked Antonio Margarito when he was number one, he ducked Shane Mosley and now he’s ducking  Manny, he picks and chooses his opponents let’s face it.”

So come on Floyd, put your money next to Manny.

You keep on telling everyone you're number one.

Take a look back at the man reckoned to be the pound for pound champion of champions.

In 1951 and 1965 Sugar Ray Robinson fought more times in a month than you fight in a year. (At least recent years suggest this!)

Quite a contrast to Sugar Ray who fought 20 times in 1941 and 14 in 1965.

The Sweet man took to boxing and a challenge like a duck on water.

Floyd we know you can fight but we want to see you in at the deep end of boxing waters.

Then the fight world will see you sink or swim!
