Olusegun getting closer to world title shot
At a recent meeting of WBC bigwigs in Cardiff, light-welterweight Ajose Olusegun's final eliminator match with France's Ali Chebah was confirmed.
The bout is due to take place in Algeria on November 1st.
NIgerian Olusegun, the Commonwealth champion, is ranked number one by the governing body whilst Chebah is number three (Erik Morales is number two). The victor becomes the mandatory challenger for Devon Alexander's title and will be thrown into the mix of one the sport's most competitive divisions, housing as it does the likes of Amir Khan, Timothy Bradley and Marcos Maidana.
Alexander defends his WBC and IBF belts against Khan victim and former WBA champ Andriy Kotelnik on Saturday night.
If Olusegun beats Chebah, the mandatory status doesn't necessarily guarantee anything, of course. But with all the to-ing and fro-ing in the division, it's possible he could fight for the belt in the next year, whether it be against a champ or in a vacant title match.
Olusegun is very well known to British fight fans and has spent most of his professional career in England, making his debut in London in 2001 with a first round stoppage of normally durable Tony Montana. His record now stands at 28-0 and includes wins over the likes of Bradley Pryce, Nigel Wright (twice) and, most recently, Colin Lynes.
