O’Donnell and Fury to gain US TV exposure
John O’Donnell’s and Tyson Fury’s forthcoming contests on Friday10 September will be screened across America on same day delay by leading broadcaster Showtime as part of its ShoBox: The New Generation series. The show at York Hall in Bethnal Green will also be televised in Canada and Britain with promoters Hennessy Sports set to reveal the UK broadcaster shortly.
Former Commonwealth welterweight champion O’Donnell will step up in class against New Jersey’s Terrence “Heat” Cauthen whilst reigning English heavyweight king Fury will face international opposition over ten rounds.
Fellow southpaw Cauthen won the lightweight bronze medal at the 1996 Olympic games in Atlanta while fighting out of Joe Frazier’s gym in Philadelphia but has failed to match this accomplishment in the pro ranks. The 34-year-old has won his last two however and will bring a respectable 35-6-1 (one no decision) record into the ring having mixed in good company throughout his career against the likes of Sechew Powell (L TKO4), Paul Williams (L UD10) and Teddy Reid (L TKO4).
“This is a step up in class for me, Cauthen is a slick experienced southpaw who has a good reputation in the U.S. and a great amateur pedigree having won a bronze medal in the Olympics for the USA. I won’t be underestimating this guy, but I am out to put on a good show and take him out in style, and show the American audience what I am all about,” commented Irishman O’Donnell, who suffered the only defeat of his 24-fight career against Christian Solano (TKO2) on American soil in May 2007.
Fury, who is believed to be taking on Brazil’s unbeaten Marcelo Luiz Nascimento (as revealed by BoxRec News earlier today), is looking to build on his stoppage victory over John McDermott in their rematch last time out.
“I am delighted to be going out to a large American audience on Showtime. I know the Americans will appreciate my style of fighting and they love heavyweights, so I am going to put a show on for them on September 10th. I want to be the first modern day Irishman to win the Heavyweight world title,” said Fury.
The undercard will include appearances from Southern Area welterweight champion Lee Purdy, former ABA champion Bradley Evans, Phil Fury, Chris Evangelou and also feature the debuts of Tyler Goodjohn (light-welterweight) and the rather amusingly named John “the Gorilla” Ryder.
