McEwan racks up 19 straight wins in the U.S.
Craig McEwan, Edinburgh's stylish southpaw, racked up his 19th straight win with a majority points decision over tough guy Danny Perez from California. 33-year-old Perez had 34 wins from his previous 41 bouts and had never been stopped in his eight defeats, meaning McEwan had to do it the hard way.
The opening round had McEwan showing a lot of nervous energy as he jabbed and moved to an opening salvo win. Perez showed some frustration in the second round as he was finding it hard to nail the slick moving Scot, and began beating his chest in some sort of macho demonstration.
It was beginning to take the shape of a bull and matador bout with McEwan moving and picking his shots while the bull (Perez) was intent on goring the Scot with single shots.
McEwan was down on the canvas in the final round but it was ruled a slip by referee Ray Corona, much to the partisan crowd's annoyance! In the end though McEwan did more work than the bullish Perez and got the nod from two of the three judges while the third saw it as a draw.
This was probably the toughest task to date for the Edinburgh man and he'll be glad it is over and done with. He'd been promised a title shot if he won by Golden Boy and it remains to be seen if they can produce the goods for him. The signs are that they can and will deliver as promised though.
