Maloney in unification dreamland

Promoter Frank Maloney is already planning his dream fight of 2011 - a world championship unification showdown between friends Jason Booth and Rendall Munroe.

Both are bidding to become world boxing champions in the coming weeks. Booth (35-5) challenges Canadian Steve Molitor (32-1) for the IBF world super-bantamweight title at Houghton-le-Spring’s Rainton Meadows Arena on Saturday September 11.

In October, Leicester bin man Munroe travels to Tokyo to challenge Toshiaki Nishioka for the WBC 8st 10lb belt.

Maloney said: “Jason and Rendall are very close and have said they would never face each other, but if both had world titles the financial rewards would be too great to ignore.

“They have sparred so many rounds and it is impossible to split the pair of them and a fight would be just as close.

“They both have incredibly hard fights in the next few weeks so there is some way to go yet, but there is nothing wrong talking about a possible unification meeting.

“If they both won their bouts it is a fight I would make in a heartbeat and one that would capture the imagination.”

In the chief supporting bout to Molitor-Booth, British featherweight champion Martin Lindsay (16-0) will box in an eight round contest before he meets the the winner of Stephen Smith and John Simpson. Other fighters on the bill include Olympic bronze medallist Tony Jeffries (7-0-1), Jon Lewis Dickinson (8-1), Travis Dickinson (6-0), Kirk Gooding’s (4-0), George Watson (8-1-2) and debutant Glen Foot.
