Magazine out for north-east amateur fans

As someone who has, once upon a time, been involved in an failed attempt to get a boxing magazine off the ground, I know how difficult it is. 'Uppercut', the magazine in which I was once involved in an editorial capacity, had a brief national run but was scuppered by the 'owner' who we quickly discovered was an egomaniac with no business plan and about the same level of knowledge of the publishing industry as I have of MMA.

Scouse fight addict Chris Walker has recently done an incredible job producing 'Mersey Gloves' - excellent in both editorial and production terms considering the humble background.

News of another regional fight magazine has come across my desk, this one specialising in the amateur code in the Tyne, Tees and Wear region.

'Punchline' started in March 2009 as part of the 'Awards for All' scheme funded by the National Lottery.

Shaun Tate, one of the driving forces behind the magazine, takes up the story.

"Since then we have been self-sustaining and have released three issues with the fourth due in December. The publication, (which is £2, with 50p going back to the clubs), is available throughout North-East England and can be found in boxing gyms, sporting goods stores and general places of interest.

"We feel this brand new magazine is a much needed addition to the Tyne, Tees and Wear amateur boxing scene and will be available on a bi-monthly basis.

"Many boxers in the region are achieving phenomenal success in a sport which does not always gain the publicity and recognition it deserves. Punchline magazine would like to work with the clubs, gyms and associations in the area in order to promote the sport.

"Each issue includes articles profiling the clubs and boxers in the area; we also include historical articles, show reports, championship results and interviews with people associated with the sport.

"Earlier issues have included articles with Tony Jeffries, Ron Harvey, Lawrence Osueke, Adam Whitfield, Glen Foot, Ben Falaja,Danny Hughes, Paul Holborn, and Kerry Kayes amongst many others .

"As the magazine has grown we have brought more writers, designers and photographers into the team and we hope to improve the publication with every ongoing issue. We hope this publication will do the sport justice, but we will need the help of boxing fans to make sure the magazine is a success."
