Khan v Maidana confirmed at press conference
Amir Khan will defend his WBA light-welterweight title against hard-hitting Argentine Marcos Maidana on December 11th at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.
The bout which will be screened in the USA on HBO and in England on Sky Box Office has been labelled by co-promoters Golden Boy as ‘a fight fan's dream.’
Khan won his title last July in England when he outpointed Andreas Kotelnik, who is the only man to defeat Maidana in 30 fights. The challenger comes into this fight with a reputation for being a quick-fire king boasting 27 knock outs including 23 in under five rounds.
Khan has come under fire from critics who claim ‘he ducks big punchers’ since he was blasted out in under a round by Breidis Prescott two years ago, but Amir said he won’t to prove his critics wrong. Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer boasted of the 2004 Olympic silver medallist saying, "Khan is one of the emerging stars of boxing, HBO couldn’t wait to get him back and will be launching a massive advertising campaign for him.”
Fans making the journey from Britain have been given a knockdown bargain price for tickets which start at just $50.
Maidana said it is the fight he really wanted for more than a year and is confident of giving Khan his second inside the distance defeat. This tussle will see a classic boxer (Khan) versus the fighter (Maidana) and Richard Schaefer added Khan will have to box clever and not stand toe to toe, because he will come unstuck if he does.
Amir has improved greatly under the watchful eye of great trainer Freddie Roach and he will need all his speed and ring guile to secure victory.
A great night of pulsating action awaits.
