Junior Witter v the Hattons - Too good to be true?

Junior Witter has publically stated his desire to kick-start his comeback at welterweight with a fight against European champion Matthew Hatton. Of course, Junior is no stranger to chasing fights with members of the Hatton family, having pursued a potentially money-spinning fight with Matthew’s older brother Ricky for many years.

Boxing fans were left despairing as every time a fight between the pair looked possible, they got a swift reminder that boxing is never straightforward, and the bout failed to materialise.

The animosity built up between Matthew’s promoter Ricky and Junior over the years could put paid to Junior getting a shot at Matthew’s European title but I think the stage could be set for a contract far bigger than just the fight alone. Ricky aims to establish himself as Britain’s biggest promoter within a few years and I think this could give him the perfect platform to do just that.

Junior is desperate to get back in the big-time and his promoter, Mick Hennessy doesn’t have a TV deal, unlike Ricky who has several dates with Sky Sports, putting the Hattons in a strong negotiating position. Could there be a contract that would make everyone a winner? Well………

Matthew Hatton agrees to a voluntary defence of his European title against Junior Witter on a Hatton promotions show. Should Junior beat Matthew then he must face Ricky Hatton in his next fight on a Hatton Promotions show. Should Junior also beat Ricky Hatton, then Hatton Promotions will promote (or at the very least, co-promote with Hennessy Sports) Junior’s next two or three fights.

Sound ridiculous? Well, maybe it does but maybe it’s the contract that would leave everyone, including the fans, happy.

Scenario 1: Matthew beats Junior

Junior gets the fight he is wanting and Matthew gets a huge platform to show the world he has emerged from Ricky’s shadow and has arrived as a genuine top class boxer. A world title shot for Matthew would surely follow.

Ricky gets the chance to promote a show that would be his biggest to date. With the history between Junior and Ricky, a Witter-Hatton showdown would be a domestic blockbuster.

Scenario 2: Junior beats Matthew and Ricky beats Junior

If Matthew falls short against Junior then he still has a lot of fights he could make, Kell Brook, Michael Jennings, John O Donnell etc. and a win against any of them would catapult him right back to where he was pre-Witter.

Ricky has mentioned a comeback on numerous occasions and if there really is any small part of him that wants to do it then surely there could be no better motivation than this? After all these years, finally giving the public the chance to see Ricky and Junior in the ring, with the added “revenge” angle. It would be simply massive in the UK and a Hatton comeback would be big news around the world. The Man City stadium could be sold out in hours and if Ricky won, then he could retire on a fantastic note.

Scenario 3: Junior beats Matthew and Ricky

If Junior manages to overcome both Hattons in big TV bills then his name would be on the lips of every boxer within touching distance of welterweight. Big names would be lining up to fight Junior and he could take his pick. Whilst Ricky would be smarting from losing, his business nous would take over and in addition to having promoted two sequential Hatton-Witter bills, Hatton Promotions would have the rights to promote Junior in at least one mega-fight, either here in the UK or in the States. Hatton Promotions would be in an incredibly strong position to negotiate future TV deals going forward.

The main winner out of this would be the fans, who would be treated to at least one Hatton-Witter fight no matter the result. Of course, this is boxing and maybe this just makes too much sense...
