Irish Boxing Awards head to Belfast

The Irish boxing awards will take place on 23rd January in An Culturlann on Belfast’s Falls Road, writes Steve Wellings. The inaugural event, which took place in the Newry Arts Centre in 2009, was popular with fans and boxers alike (see photo, copyright Irish-boxing.com). As a result, the Irish Boxing Supporters Club have organised a similar show with additional awards and some added features.

Last year Paul McCloskey bagged the boxer of the year award, while Martin Lindsay was named prospect of the year and Rinty Monaghan was the first to be inducted into the hall of fame. This time around a coach of the year will be named, alongside an Irish champion of the year. Host Cormac Campbell will guide the audience through the highs and lows of 2009 on the domestic scene.

Super-bantamweight hope Carl Frampton and unbeaten middleweight puncher Gary O’Sullivan will battle it out for the prospect of the year crown whilst Bernard Dunne, Paul McCloskey and Matthew Macklin are aiming to be named Professional Boxer of the Year.
Bogart Menswear will sponsor the event and a limited number of tickets remain available. Those interested should contact Bobby Lavery on 07808175612. BoxRec News will be "ringside" to see who claims the coveted prizes.
