I like Carl Froch but...
...at one point in the not too distant past I didn't. He used to get on my nerves...but to be brutally honest, I couldn't think why.
Was it because he talked too much? Well, bearing in mind my boxing hero is one Naseem Hamed I think talking too much is not a valid reason.
Was it because I was (and to be fair still am) in forum speak a Calzaghe 'nuthugger'?
Anyway, I didn't particularly like him and I still can't work out why. Go Figure!
I vividly remember a nothing fight on a Friday night (should have been at the pub, wasn't) against a rough as badgers Aussie by the name of Dale Westerman. Westerman landing right hands with a regularity that was a little alarming, Froch looking sluggish, and, while I never wanted Carl to lose (anyone who wants a Brit to lose to an Aussie at anything should be shot) I have to admit I 'enyoyed' seeing Froch struggle.
Something has changed though. I now like Carl Froch, I admire his fighting heart, his willingness to fight anyone and I admire the fact for the most part he gets on with his lot despite a criminal lack of TV backing from Sky et al. Just by entering the Super Six, Carl deserves all the credit in the world.
So, when I say I hope that Froch dethrones King Arthur on 2nd October in Monaco (where BoxRec News will be ringside) I genuinely mean it. Will the fight be on 'Council TV' or Primetime? Again, I find it criminal that this is a debate which does the rounds but that's a different argument for a different piece...
No - I will leave it that. I like Carl Froch, it really does not matter how he would have fared against Calzaghe (Calzaghe wide decision, sorry) or how he does against Abraham (Abraham KO 8 - well, Rome was not built in a day!).
What matters is that in these current fighting times where we have '60-40 and I will kick your arse' here we have a guy who is willing to fight the best and give the fans what they want.
We should all be grateful for that, we really should.
See, I told you. I like Carl Froch. It doesn't sound totally right somehow but it feels right. Now, where did a put the DVD of Calzaghe v Lacy?
