Harry Carpenter elected to International Boxing Hall of Fame

The late, legendary British boxing broadcaster Harry Carpenter was elected to the International Boxing Hall of Fame earlier today.

It is a fitting honour for Carpenter, who died in March this year.

The Londoner, who joined the BBC in 1949 and was the Corporation's voice of boxing until his retirement in 1994, was elected in the Observer category.

The International Boxing Hall of Fame and Museum is located in Canastota, New York; those elected are chosen by the Boxing Writers Association of America and a panel of international boxing historians (including BoxRec News' Eric Armit).  The 22nd annual Hall of Fame induction ceremony will take place on June 12th.

The big name inductees who will grab the headlines are Mike Tyson and Sylvester Stallone.  But Harry's election will raise a smile among the millions of British fight fans of a certain age who will always associate him with a time when things, including this sport of ours, seemed so much simpler.
