Groves spars Froch ahead of Commonwealth title shot

Super-middleweight hot prospect George Groves has once again been sparring with WBC champion Carl Froch as he prepares for his eagerly anticipated Commonwealth title challenge against Charles Adamu at the MEN Arena on April 3rd.

"We were up in Nottingham, up at his old amateur gym, sparring with Carl," said Groves.

"Obviously he's boxing soon in the Super Six tournament at the end of April, a couple of weeks after my fight. So we've both got a lot coming up and we can use each other to get each other in shape for upcoming bouts.

"Froch is a top class operator, he's the best in the world.

"He's where I want to be, he holds the title that I want so he's a direct comparison to me. I can see exactly what I need to do to get to where I want to be."

Groves had previously sparred with Froch before, though that was over a year ago towards the start of the Hammersmith fighter's fledgling career and Froch was complimentary about the 21-year-old's progress.

"Carl said he's seen massive improvement in me since the last time we sparred, which is really nice.

"He said he'd be keeping an eye on how things are going for me, and once he's won the Super Six, maybe a few years down the line, he'll pass his belt onto me!"

World champion Froch has previously boxed Adamu himself, taking on the Ghanaian at a similar stage of his career to Groves for the same title back in 2004. And Froch's trainer Robert McCracken was on hand to give Groves a few tips ahead of the fight.

"McCracken said I can outbox him, I can outwar him, but make it easy for yourself and outbox him," added Groves.

"He said the stuff I was doing with Carl, if you do that you'll have no problem which is a nice thing to say because obviously they've been there and done it already."

Groves also mentioned he'll be rooting for the Cobra in his upcoming bout against Mikkel Kessler.

"He's a Brit and I want him to do well because he's a Brit but also because he's a nice guy and he's doing me a favour by letting me learn from him and be around him."
