GB amateurs guarantee five medals at Europeans

Gamal Yafai and Tom Stalker will join yesterday's quarter-final winners Khalid Yafai and Iain Weaver and Welsh team mate Andrew Selby, in the semi-finals of the European Championships in Moscow. GB's fantastic performances have so far secured five guaranteed medals at the competition and the team will now box for a guaranteed silver and a chance to win gold on Friday (schedule to follow).

Despite his best efforts, Northside ABC's Tommy Stubbs was unable to make it past Irishman Paddy Barnes.

Today's results:

48kg: Tommy Stubbs lost to Patrick Barnes (Ireland) 8-1

The impressive Irishman progressed to the semi-finals against Tommy with a display of controlled and accurate boxing. 3-0 down after the first round, Tommy was unable to get back into the contest, and Barnes added a single point in the second and four more in the last for an 8-1 win.

54kg : Andrew Selby (Wales) beat Furkan Memis (Turkey) 4-1

Throwing most of the shots in the first round, Andrew finished 1-0 up. The Turk caught Andrew with two early shots in the second but the Welshman pegged his opponent back to leave the scores poised at 2-2 going into the final round. Finally the extra speed, class and style was to tell against the Turk's tight guard, and Andrew picked up two more points to rack up a 4-2 win.

54kg: Gamal Yafai beat John Nevin (Ireland) 7-1

After a cagey opener, Gamal strode into a 6-0 lead in the second with a fantastic display of counter-punching against the experienced Irishman. Inevitably Nevin came forward strongly in the last but it was to no avail as Gamal secured a fantastic victory characterised by discipline and technique. An unbelievable achievement from the younger Yafai as he joins his brother in the semis.

60kg - Tom Stalker beat Artjoms Ramlavs (Latvia) 2-2 (count back)

Tom Stalker's success comes hot on the heels of his win over World Champion Domenico Valentino. With the scores 2-2 at the end of two scrappy rounds, the final round was an attritional battle of wills. Neither boxer gave an inch, and with the scores still 2-2 at the bell the contest went to count back. With the GB contingent on tenterhooks, the referee raised the Scouser's hand, and with that Stalker was through to the semis.

The team will take a well-deserved rest tomorrow (Thursday) and all semi-finals take place on Friday, with five boxing for a place in the finals.
