Friday night fights in New York for Khan's travelling fans
Fight-addicted fans who are travelling to see Amir Khan defend his WBA light-welterweight title against Paulie Malignaggi in New York a week on Saturday have a couple of choices in the city as regards fistic entertainment the night before the big bout.
Golden Boy and Joe DeGuardia are running a showcase of unbeaten prospects at the Bronx's Paradise Theater headed by Cincinnati lightweight Adrien Broner (11-0).
In Manhattan, 'Church Street Boxing Gym’s Friday Night Fights NYC Series' sees a mix of amateur boxing and Muay Thai action, the main event being in the latter discipline as Sean Hinds faces Chris Romulo.
“Only the best of the best fighters ever to appear on our series will be competing at this event” said event promoter Justin Blair, who also owns the Church Street Boxing Gym, “Further more, this time they are all fighting each other!”.
The popularity of Muay Thai has apparently grown in recent years, especially in New York, where MMA is still illegal whereas Muay Thai is perfectly legal.
Doors open at 6.30pm with the first bout at 7.00pm at The Lexington Avenue Armory. 68 Lexington Avenue (between 25th and 26th Streets in Manhattan). Tickets are $35, $60 & $85.
Tickets are available either in advance (www.fridaynightfights.com) or on the night of the event, at the door when available.
