Farrag upsets world ranked Campbell in ABA semi-finals

After enduring a barren two-year period at the prestigious ABA finals, Merseyside returned to the forefront of amateur boxing last weekend as no fewer than four of the region's boxers progressed to the upcoming final with a series of stunning displays on away turf at Retford Town Hall.

The most impressive victory of the night was that of Ryan Farrag who turned the 57kg division on its head with a well deserved 18-16 victory over 2008 European gold medallist Luke Campbell who was ranked number three in the world.

Few outside of Farrag’s gym gave the exciting youngster much hope of upsetting Hull’s Campbell.  However, from the outset it was clear that Farrag had arrived with a well prepared gameplan.

Farrag decided not to use the aggressive tactics that have seen him impress the fans in recent fights.  Instead, he beat Campbell at his own game as he put on an accurate counter-punching masterclass.  Farrag, who has faced a host of decorated boxers in this year’s tournament, remained in control throughout as Campbell tried desperately to close the gap that was widening as each round drew to a close.

Despite a decent rally in the final stanza, Campbell, a former two-time ABA champion, could not do enough to close the gap as Farrag collected another great scalp with an impressive 18-16 victory.

Farrag has now beaten three England and GB internationals to get to the final (European gold medallist Luke Campbell, Commonwealth gold medallist John Quigley and England international Peter Cope).

He will now face London’s Martin Ward on 14th May in the final.
